Warm Breakfasts

I don't always serve a warm breakfast in the morning, though I have every intention to the night before. So I have implemented a new system. On those nights when I can't sleep, I will make breakfast. Most foods heat really nicely the day after {I always use the oven} and while fresh is best, if the family is having cereal or frozen waffles {even though they're homemade} for weeks in a row, a reheated warm breakfast is not so bad. Since I was a child I have suffered from insomnia, and usually when it strikes I type away on my computer. But the truth is that electronics before bedtime is bad, and will increase the chances of insomnia. Our brains are biologically wired to be awake when the sun is out because bright light after dark causes the brain to stop secreting the hormone melatonin that makes us sleepy. So when I can't sleep I will do something with my hands in a dimly lit space. Maybe knit, crochet, or make breakfast! This is all within my goal of building strong bonds with my children by starting our days in rich conversation over a satisfying warm meal. The beginning of a day is such an important, sacred time.

Here are some ideas:

Muffins, cinnamon rolls, different kinds of breads are also yummy foods that can be made before hand to survive the rush of the morning ~ in case you're like me and find that lunch time is upon us before we know it. It was easier for me to link the recipes to these posts, but I do make these and different varieties of these breakfasts. I hardly ever follow a recipe to the tee though.. I get an idea and run with it and make it mine!

The last two cannot be made ahead of time, but they looked too good not to share! I have made several versions of these recipes. And the last two can definitely be intertwined.. Adding strawberries to the grilled panini, and adding banana to the Strawberry Shortcake French Toast. And let's not forget about blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, peaches, melon... You name it! Research what foods are in season in your area to be sure you're getting the best deal for your money, and it's a great way to rotate the foods you eat all year long.

  2. These all sound great! We do a lot of hot breakfasts around here, but it gets to be rather...eggy. My clan would love it if...I mean WHEN I experiment with these recipes. :) Thanks for sharing.

I'm sorry about your insomnia. I've battled that on and off over the years as well. It can be a trial, but you are using yours as a blessing. Thank you for that perspective.
